Cat Hip Pain Relief

Cats are notorious for masking their symptoms when they are in pain or not feeling well which can make it difficult for us to identify an issue. Your cat may have hip pain if you notice any of the following:
  • Limping in the affected leg or legs
  • Stiffness that may be noticeable when your cat gets up after lying down
  • Difficulty or reluctance when jumping or managing stairs
  • Sleep more or less than normal
  • Excessive meowing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Matted fur due to a lack of grooming as it may be too painful for your cat to reach certain spots
  • Cats who are in pain may also have behavioural changes. (For instance, they might be more irritable than usual)

If you suspect your cat may have hip pain you should take them to the veterinarian so they can perform a full physical exam and conduct a diagnostic test like an X-rays of the hip. Depending on the severity of the condition, your veterinarian may recommend a more conservative treatment at first. They may prescribe medication to reduce pain and inflammation along with a supplement which will contain glucosamine and chondroitin.

Living with a senior cat has its rewards as well as challenges as they are more likely to develop conditions and illnesses that create pain and discomfort. Arthritis is a common but often unrecognised disorder in older cats. In one study, 90 percent of cats over 12 years of age showed evidence of arthritis. Here are a few cat hip pain relief measures:

  • Joint and Hip supplements containing glucosamine and/or chondroitin can help
  • Omega-3 fatty acids can help relieve pain from arthritis and other causes
  • Other medications are available to help relieve your cat’s pain and may be necessary. Your veterinarian will help you determine which medication is best suited for your cat
  • For some cats, alternative therapies such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy and even massage can help ease the pain of arthritis
  • Weight loss, if appropriate, can help relieve stress and pressure on sensitive joints and help make arthritic cats more comfortable
  • Exercise can also keep joints and muscles supple
  • Provide your cat with soft bedding
  • Make sure your cat’s litter box is in an easily accessible location and is easy for your cat to enter and exit - one with low sides for easy access
We would always recommend that you consult with your veterinarian to establish a safe and effective pain relief plan for your cat.
