Essential Fatty Acid Supplements for Cats

It is important to remember is that fats are not all bad, essential fatty acids are important for our cats as they not only give them a sleek coat and healthy skin but they can also help reduce inflammation and protect against cancer.
The reason fats are considered essential is because like us humans, cats are not able to make or synthesize \ Essential Fatty Acid on their own, they need to be supplied in their diet. The main essential fatty acids that your cat’s diet needs are AA (arachidonic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) DHA (docosahexaenoic).
  • AA = promotes the repair and growth of skeletal muscle tissue
  • EPA = is one of several omega-3 fatty acids and plays numerous physiological roles and reduces inflammation
  • DHA = is a type of omega-3 fat that may improve many aspects of your health, from your brain to your heart.

There are two categories of essential fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega-6.  Veterinarians tend to be more concerned as to how they can use essential fatty acids such as Omega-3 to improve a cat’s health and help them fight diseases in a natural way.  Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish like salmon, tuna, sardines and pollock.  Omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and can treat, prevent, or delay the onset of inflammatory diseases, including arthritis, allergies, cancer, kidney disease and heart disease.

Omega-6 fatty acids play a critical role in skin health by maintaining the outermost water barrier of the skin.  Before changing your cat’s diet or adding supplements, talk to your veterinarian, to make sure any adjustments are the most beneficial to your furry friend.

In summary, if your pet is getting plenty of fatty acids, either in the diet or as a supplement, they are likely to be healthier and live longer.  We highly recommend supplements to prevent or delay the onset of diseases for pets of all ages but urge you to speak to your Veterinarian first.
